Every person is already in relationship with the Sacred. Sometimes we just need help noticing it.

So, What Is Spiritual Direction?


Spiritual direction is the art of recognizing the spirit in all things—including the unique and unfolding story of someone’s life. It is a sacred conversation where one person helps another:

  • Tell their spiritual story
  • Track the subtle stirrings of the Spirit within their heart, mind, and body
  • Discover and discern their original, undivided nature
  • Foster a deeper communion between themselves and the Divine


Rather than focusing on concepts, doctrines, or abstract ideas, spiritual direction turns our attention to experience—what is happening within and around us right now.


It is about listening with sacred curiosity.


Spiritual direction honors a core truth of the human journey:
 We need companionship and guidance in order to stay on the path of freedom, healing, and authenticity.


At its heart, spiritual direction is:

Listening with another person to the inner movement of the Divine within us—leading us toward a new understanding of sanctity, wholeness, and love.


What Spiritual Direction Is Not


Just as important as understanding what spiritual direction is is understanding what it is not. Spiritual direction does not involve:

  • Moral instruction
  • Telling someone what is true or correct
  • Pushing outcomes that align with the director’s beliefs or goals
  • “Fixing,” problem-solving, or giving advice
  • Psychotherapy or counseling
  • Doing instead of being with another person


A spiritual director is not a teacher, therapist, or life coach.
They are a companion—one who walks alongside you as you discover how the Divine is moving in your life.
